Veer mentions about a welcome move from Hutch on zero rental for GPRS from Hutch. As he rightly says any move from telcos in increasing data services adoption is always a welcome move and in India more than anything it is pricing which is the critical factor drives adoption.
In the same context I wanted to highlight’s Airtel’s service the recent structure of which I like a lot and I am not sure if it is much publicly known.
Airtel has divided its data as service into three categories.
Airtel Live: (pre installed on all pre-paid & post paid) – But this is the complete example of walled garden. A user is able to do GPRS but the only site that is browsable is Airtel WAP site. Airtel I am told makes a lot of money on this through ringtone & downloads.This is of not much use to me.
Airtel Online: This is a service which has to be activated by sending two SMS is charged at Rs 5/day. In this service one can browse any WAP site and it is eat as much as you can – unlimited option . It is charged on a daily basis and can be shutdown any time by sending another SMS. I use this option and it works really great, the best part about this as Manoj had mentioned in MoMo Delhi is that it works even if GSM network is down. My GSM connection had stopped working while I was in Mumbai & Delhi but I was happily browsing blog posts through my GPRS connection.

Airtel Mobile: This option allows you to make use of your mobile phone to connect to your Laptop/PC and enable internet connection to your Laptop/PC. This is again an unlimited download option and is charged at Rs 20/day. It can be activated by sending one SMS. The connection is active from the time it is activated to the next day morning ~11 am. If you wish to continue you would have to send another SMS. I have not tried this but have heard mixed reviews about this.

If one really looks at it the price points are not much different from the competitors. Airtel Online comes pit tp ne 150 Rs/month and Airtel Mobile is 600Rs/month. But the model adopted is what is remarkable which gives a lot of control to the user.
Airtel Mobile Office actually has three service plans:
Rs 399 a month for 100 MB of data and Rs 5 per MB thereafter.
Rs 599 for 1 GB a month.
Rs 799 for 1.5 GB a month.
I was on the 599 plan for the last one year, but seeing as I’ve only done 132 MB up and 818 MB down in all this while despite being a heavy user (from phone’s log), I’ve downgraded to plan 399.
Did’nt know that mobile office had different plan , when I enquired I was given the impression that there is no download limit. Through a phone the download/upload does get limited.

Airtel Mobile
‘Airtel Mobile’ is available for Rs 20/day unlimited downloads. You have to activate every day ( after 24 hrs)
Send a message ‘MO’ to 6123
You will get 2 confirmation message.
After that you have to send a messgae ‘ALL’ to 2567 to get your handset specific configuration setting.
Then connect your mobile to your PC , fire up the PC suite application that comes with your mobile phone ( for ex Nokia PC Suite ) and in that you will find an option to connect to internet, follow the steps and with that you would be good to access internet through your phone.

It involves no validity and no talktime. If you recharge with Rs. 375/-, you can use unlimited internet on your mobile and as well as on your laptop.
There is no limit in upload/downloading…It is working even if your roaming….

In Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Airtel currently has two packages for GPRS
– Rs. 199 per month (100 MB limit)
– Rs. 499 per month (unlimited)
The former plan can be activated by sending “GPRS199 ACTIVE” and the latter plan can be activated by sending “GPRS ACTIVE” to 121.
I was also told that this can be used anywhere in India and there will no extra charge for roaming. The only problem is that these are monthly plans and not daily plans and hence though you want to use only for 3 days you will have to pay the charges for the entire month (at least this was what I was told by the customer rep.).

After a month long experience of using the Airtel Mobile Office service, I can say for sure
that Airtel happens to be one of the worst service providers in the country. The word
“Mobile Office” refers to the non-existant fictional net connection provided to gullible
customers at an exhorbitant price.
The data transfer speed is below .5 kbps at any given time and a ping of http://www.google.com
produces 100% data loss. It is really strange that Airtel pompously announces that it has no
data transfer limits when practically no data transfer happens at all.
The Airtel customer support is a whole new experiance. When I complained that my Mobile
Office connection is slow, the technical support person told me to wait for the send bytes
count to reach 10000 before launching my browser.
If it doesnt hit you in the face, this solution is just absurd. I know it because I am a
technical support executive taking calls from the US. He could fool anybody with this, but
not a guy like me who troubleshoots systems over the phone for a living. Well, I did try it
out anyway, and as I expected – the send bytes count never goes above 5000 and also by this
time, Airtel automatically disconnects me.
The next time I called to complain, the Airtel support person asked me how much I paid for
the connection and as soon as I replied, disconnected me! I have’nt been able to connect to
Airtel Customer Service after that. I realise that it is ok to ban abusive customers, but
banning irate customers who use proper language is unheard of. And all I wanted to ask was
if I would get a proper net connection if I pay more.
I do freelance writing for websites besides my steady job and I just lost a major project
because I could not log on to my email account.
I tried for about an hour in the evening trying to log on, repeatedly refreshing the page
and waiting like an obsessed idiot wishing that my inbox would open up and show me the
project requirements. When it did finally open, I found that my agent got sick of waiting
for my acknowledgement on email and awarded the project to someone else.
Hell, if you have 300 bucks to spend on something that doesnt work, Airtel Mobile Office is
the thing for you! But, why dont change the 300 rupees into tens and burn it all? That would
be more worthwhile.

I tried Airtel GPRS in Rajasthan and it is slow…..very slow….when it works. Then it just stops working altogether after the month is up and you will have to wait while they re-enable it again. After waiting for their help line (dial 121 wait for all the options then 4, wait for all the options, 4 and finally get someone online who doesn’t speak English and hangs up) There has to be a better provider out there….

hi there guys.. i am from andhra pradesh n i have switched to airtel postpaid connection from vodafone prepaid, am i eligible for the above mentioned plans??? n doesn’t it work simply like vodafone like free activation n 10kb/10ps surfin charge?????
Could anybody tell me if Airtel EDGE and MOBILE OFFICE is different? I had a subscription since last day for Airtel EDGE, however Customer Care said the settings is the same as MOBILE OFFICE. So I am pretty confused, since EDGE is 699/month (200kbps supposed to be), where as Mobile office is 399/month.
When I tried connected to my laptop, it gives only 112kbps, which is why i am writing this.
Please help!!

hi guys im from Delhi im using airtel GPRS with 99 monthly rental and im getting preety good speed around 5-8KBps and in off peak Hours im getting 12-18KBps for downloading and for Browsing im getting around 128Kbps and im using Nokia 9300. I love airtel services
I were using Airtel Mobile Office…here in kerala @250 rs/month…(unimitted downloads)… But last month idea has introduced 9rs/day unlimitted GPRS Internet in Kerala… I took connection…I am very happy with it… 🙂

N73 is an edge enable GPRS mobile…service provided by service providers vary from dtate to…in Rajasthan (where i live)…airtel has provide us with a #(% Rs|month service via “Mobile Office” it provides unlimited download….with a speed of 3 to 5 Kpps during day and 7 to 10 Kbps during night hours (for edge enabled GPRS mobile only) …..so better use airtel’s Mobile Office service and also use Opera 4.1 beta version as a mobile browser…u will love it, though N73 has its own browser….but opera 4.1 is far much better….

its probably 250 Rs/month in tamil nadu….it is a pretty hectic job for one to connect mobile office on mobile as well as on computer (using mobile PC connection via usb cable)
since one has to accomplish various settings for first time…then you can have a galla time downloading…..

I have been using airtel Mobile office since last 3 years …. on 2 different sim cards prepaid and billing from the same location ( my home , Mumbai Central (East) …
When i first got Prepaid mobile office …. before 3 years
Price per day for Unlimited internet 7 Rs/ Speed which i got about 12 to 20 KBps download …… very good ….
Before a year and a half ……
Price Per day for unlimited internet 15 Rs/ Speed which i got about 7-9 KBps download …. okey dokey …..
Since last six months or so ….
Price per day for unlimited Internet Rs 25 / Speed which we get …..less than 1 Kbps …. 250 bytes / Sec ….
All in all useless speaking to all their Customer care associates …
when i complained about slow browsing from PC by using mobile office airtel
also informed them that i also have vodafone and aircel whose speed are working good using the same pc,cable and mobile …….
but only when i connect airtel i get slow speed ….using the same pc,cable and mobile
the excuses i got from them …
1. Please use another mobile
2. your setting are having problem … please delete and setup configuration again ….
3. clear the cache
4. Use any other browser ….
5. remove opera mini from your mobile and install bolt
6. your sim might have some problem please get it checked in the airtel retail store
7. Switch off the phone and then switch it on and try again later.
8. Reset your mobile to factory default.
9.Your problem will be solved in 24 hours …i.e. 24 working hours means atleast 3-4 days ….
etc etc etc …….
I think airtel should change their MOTTO to this ….

I am from Delhi. I am a vodafone user as well as using airtel connection. I had activated 249 plan on my airtel connection as per described according to my requirements. They told me that I would get some free calls as well as the call rates are also cheaper. But don’t know was that just to attract customers or what??? I just filed my complaint to them but, is not any hearing there So I just moved for http://consumercourt.net/forum.php where I again filed my complaint about the very much charged bill amount. Hope to get some help from them ASAP.
