“Brand” is a very very powerful concept, it deals the power of influence . I have seen couple of people loathe the idea of brand for the unnecessary floss it creates but nonetheless I love the concept of brands very much. Recently had been thinking quite a lot about the brand value/image of IIIT right now. IIIT has to go a very long way before it achieves a worldwide known brand status. I believe that my college IIIT-H should very actively pursue building of the brand of the Institute , if it wants achieve the vision of being the premier Computer Science Institute of the country,better than even all the other IIT’s. Now according to me there are long term and short term activities that needs to be happen to build a great brand. The long term part would be to develop world class,innovative and societally relevant technologies and roll it out to the world. Work in the area of Natural Language Processing, Speech Processing in Indian Languages, ICT in education are some efforts already taken in this direction. But the long term part would add value only in another 20-50 years or so. In the short term the Institute should foster more relationship with Industry.Industry offered courses and internship for the 2nd and 3rd year students needs to be encouraged . Big time effort to get big MNC’s involved in the campus recruitment should be made. The short term part adds in immediate value towards building of the brand. This realization in my fouth year of college made me want to nominate myself for the post of Seceratry of the “Placements and PR committee”. I was elected the seceratry and I focussed more of my energy towards this role as compared to research work which was my focus in the 3rd year. I am very glad right now with the kind of placements that is going in my college for the batch of Mrs Padmaja Kanda. Oops !!Should I not be saying Brand Manager.
